Summer in Sonoma County is absolutely beautiful. The vineyards are lush and green, the days are long and warm, and the tasting rooms are buzzing with energy. It is peak season for wine country visits, and with a little preparation, you can make the most of every moment.

Summer in Sonoma wine country means warm sunshine, outdoor tastings, and some of the best wine experiences of the year.

After years of guiding summer tours in Sonoma, I have picked up a few things that make the difference between a good day and a perfect one. Here is what you need to know before you go.

What to Wear

Sonoma wine country is casual by nature, but that does not mean anything goes. The sweet spot is polished casual — think comfortable but put-together. Here is what works:

Light layers are essential. Mornings can start in the low 60s with fog, and by afternoon it is often in the mid-80s or higher. A light jacket or cardigan that you can tie around your waist keeps you comfortable all day.

Comfortable closed-toe shoes are a must. Many wineries have gravel pathways, outdoor patios, and vineyard areas. Sandals might look cute but they will slow you down. Choose stylish flats, low wedges, or clean sneakers.

Sunglasses and a hat are not optional in summer. You will be outdoors more than you think, and Sonoma sun is strong.

Skip anything too tight or structured. You are going to be sitting, standing, walking, and enjoying generous pours. Comfort matters.

What to Bring

Your ID. Every winery will check it, no exceptions.

Sunscreen. Apply before you leave and bring extra for reapplication. Even with a guide handling logistics, you will spend time outdoors.

A reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated between tastings is the single best thing you can do for your palate and your energy level. Most tasting rooms offer water, but having your own is smart.

A phone charger or portable battery. Between the photos, the maps, and the group coordination, your battery will drain fast.

Cash for tips. While most wineries take cards, having some cash is helpful for tipping at tasting rooms and restaurants.

For more on navigating the tasting room, read our wine tasting etiquette tips — from tipping to using the dump bucket.

A light appetite. Eating before and during wine tasting is crucial, especially in summer heat. Bring a snack or plan a lunch stop.

What to Know

Reservations matter more than ever. Summer is the busiest season in Sonoma County, and many wineries require advance bookings, especially on weekends. If you are touring on your own, plan ahead. If you are with a guide, we handle all of this for you.

Pace yourself. With long sunny days, it is tempting to go hard from the first pour. But the best approach is to start slow, sip thoughtfully, and use the dump bucket without guilt. The goal is to enjoy and remember every wine, not just drink through the list.

Morning tastings are a hidden gem. The light is gorgeous, the crowds are thin, and your palate is at its freshest. Our tours typically start mid-morning for exactly this reason.

Take a winery break. Some of the best summer moments in Sonoma happen between wineries — a shady lunch under oak trees, a stop at a roadside farm stand, or simply soaking in the views with the windows down.

Summer Is Sonoma at Its Best

There is a reason summer draws the biggest crowds to wine country. The wines are pouring, the energy is high, and the landscape is stunning. With the right preparation and a local guide who knows the rhythm of the season, your summer wine tasting day will be one to remember.
